Individual & Family Plans

Three main types of health insurance are available for individuals and families: Affordable Care Act (ACA), short-term, and medical indemnity plans. Each category offers a variety of options tailored to different needs. iHealth is here to help you compare the benefits of each plan, ensuring you find the right coverage for your medical needs at an affordable price.

ACA (Affordable Care Act) Plans

Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans, often referred to as major medical or “Obamacare,” offer some of the most comprehensive coverage available. Designed to meet all ACA requirements, these plans provide extensive protection, especially for those with chronic conditions or unexpected medical emergencies.

  • ACA plans cover a wide range of healthcare services, including routine doctor visits, prescriptions, preventive care, and hospital stays. Available to nearly everyone, these plans guarantee coverage regardless of preexisting conditions, helping you manage everyday health needs and more significant medical expenses with peace of mind.

Short-Term Coverage (up to 12 months)

If an Affordable Care Act (ACA) plan isn’t within your budget or you missed the enrollment deadline, a short-term health insurance plan might be a good option. While short-term plans generally offer less coverage than ACA plans and don’t help you avoid state tax penalties, they are available year-round and can help with unexpected medical emergencies unrelated to preexisting conditions.

  • However, short-term plans don’t meet ACA requirements and may not cover all your healthcare needs. Be sure to carefully review the details of any plan before applying. Additionally, short-term plans are not eligible for government subsidies like ACA plans, and purchasing one could affect your eligibility for other health insurance options, including ACA plans or COBRA coverage.

Medical Indemnity

Medical indemnity or fee-for-service plans provide a fixed payment for certain healthcare services. For example, if you visit a doctor, the plan might pay you a set amount—such as $50—regardless of the actual cost of the visit.

  • Medical indemnity plans can help cover out-of-pocket expenses like copays and coinsurance when used alongside other insurance. These plans can be purchased as standalone coverage or as part of an insurance package. However, like short-term plans, medical indemnity plans do not meet the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements and will not help you avoid state tax penalties. They are also ineligible for government subsidies and typically do not cover preexisting conditions. Additionally, indemnity plans may have limits on benefits, such as per-incident, annual, or lifetime caps.
  • While medical indemnity plans aren’t suitable for everyone, they can be a helpful option if you’re looking to cover specific medical costs or supplement other health insurance.
